The Effects of an Aggression Management Program on Knowledge and Attitudes of Aggression Management in Psychiatric Nurses

Abstract
Purpose: This study was to verify the effects of an aggression management program on knowledge and attitudes of aggression management in psychiatric nurses.

Methods: This research design was quasi-experimental research of a non-equivalent control group pre-post test design. The total subjects were 22 psychiatric nurses. The research tools were knowledge, management of aggression and violence attitude scale (MAVAS) and overt aggression scale (OAS). Data was collected by self-reported structured questionnaires from June 13th to July 30th, 2008 and analyzed with frequency, percentage, x2 test, Fisher¡¯s exact test, and Mann-Whitney U test.

Results: The scores of knowledge and attitudes of aggression management was significantly different between the two groups.

Conclusion: Based on the above findings, this program could be applied as an effective nursing intervention in managing patients¡¯ aggression by psychiatric nurses in nursing practice.
